The Semi-automatic SVD (Snaiperskaya Vintovka Dragunova) was adopted by the Soviet Union military in 1963. Chambered for the 7.62 x 54R round but using a specially developed sharp hardened steel core bullet in a 10 round magazine (the rifle can also fire standard 7.62×54R ammunition with either conventional, tracer or armoured piercing incendiary heads). Used with the PSO-1 optical sight, but has back up iron sights if the primary scope is damaged. It will also take the standard AK47 bayonet. A version of the SVD was developed for airborne troops with a folding butt stock and shortened barrel.
