The semi-automatic SVD (Snaiperskaya Vintovka Dragunova) was adopted by the Soviet Union in 1963. Chambered for the 7.62x54R round but using a specially developed sharp hardened steel core bullet in a 10 round magazine. A version of the SVD was developed for airbourne troops with a folding butt stock and shortened barrel.
