The FAL ( Fusil Automatique Léger, English: Light Automatic Rifle) is a battle rifle designed by Belgian small arms designer Dieudonné Saive and manufactured by FN Herstal. The FAL is one of the most widely known designs of the 20th century. It was adopted for use in more than 90 countries around the world and has been in service since 1953. It is chambered for the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge using a 20 or 30 round detachable box magazine (although originally designed for the .280 British intermediate cartridge). The British Commonwealth variant of the FAL was redesigned from FN's metrical FAL into British imperial units and was produced under licence as the L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle.
