Panel Reads:-
This type of firearm used the "matchlock" mechanism from the late 1400's. It uses a lever much like the hammer on later firearms called a serpentine, which held a slow burning matchcord. When the trigger was pulled, the burning wick would drop into a flash pan, which contained black powder. This ignited which in turn ignited the main charge in the barrel firing the projectile (lead ball). This method of setting off the charge was a great improvement on earlier methods of ignition allowing the musketeer to keep both hands on the gun improving his aim drastically.
